Ingredients

  • 1 pound flank steak or pork shoulder, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup fish sauce
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, thinly sliced
  • 10 betel leaves
  • Hoisin sauce, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced beef or pork, fish sauce, sugar, garlic, and vegetable oil. Mix well to coat the meat.
  2. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
  3. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium heat.
  4. Meanwhile, on a cutting board or plate, lay out the betel leaves. Spoon a scoop of the marinated meat mixture onto each leaf.
  5. Top with onion and carrot slices.
  6. Fold the betel leaves into tidy packages, securing them with toothpicks if desired.
  7. Grill the bo la lot packages for 5-7 minutes per side, or until cooked through.
  8. Serve immediately with a drizzle of hoisin sauce, if preferred.
